A dog breed "developed around 1825 by English miners who wanted a dog that would exterminate the rats in mines. The breed, which takes its name from a small town in England, was obtained by crossings among the Dandie Dinmont, the otterhound, and the whippet.... Despite its lamblike locks, the Bedlington is by nature snarly and aggressive, and is a great ratcatcher... The Bedlington is today an apartment dog. It is also an attentive and barking watchdog (is there another kind of watchdog? one that doesn't bark?)" (Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, 1980).
